Earth / ˈ ɜːr [invalid input: 'th'] / (also the world [n 5] , in Greek : Γαῖα Gaia , [n 6] or in Latin : Terra [26] ) is the third planet from the Sun , the densest planet in the Solar System , the largest of the Solar System's four terrestrial planets , and the only astronomical object known to harbor life . The earliest life on Earth arose at least 3.5 billion years ago. Earlier physical evidence of life includes graphite , a biogenic substance , in 3.7 billion-year-old metasedimentary rocks discovered in southwestern Greenland , as well as, "remains of biotic life " found in 4.1 billion-year-old rocks in Western Australia . [27] [28] Earth's biodiversity has expanded continually except when interrupted by mass extinctions . [29] Although scholars estimate that over 99 percent of all species of life (over five billion) [30] that ever lived on Earth are extinct , [31] [32] there are still an estimated 10–14 million extant species, [33] [34] of which about 1.2 million have been documented and over 86 percent have not yet been described. [35] Over 7.3 billion humans [36] live on Earth and depend on its biosphere and minerals for their survival . Earth's human population is divided among about two hundred sovereign states which interact through diplomacy , conflict, travel, trade and communication media .

Earth ( IPA : /ˈɜː(r)θ/ , often referred to as the Earth , Terra , the World or Planet Earth ) is the third planet in the solar system in terms of distance from the Sun , and the fifth largest. It is also the largest of its planetary system 's terrestrial planets , making it the largest solid body in the solar system, and it is the only place in the universe known to humans to support life . It is also the densest planet in the solar system. Widely accepted scientific evidence indicates that the Earth was formed around 4.57 billion years ago [1] and its natural satellite , the Moon , was orbiting it shortly thereafter, around 4.53 billion years ago.

Earth is the only planet in our solar system , or the known universe whose surface has liquid water , covering over 70% of the surface and dividing it into five oceans and seven continents . There is a relatively thick atmosphere composed of 76% nitrogen , 21% oxygen , 1% argon , plus traces of other gases including carbon dioxide and water .
